2007 - 2009 Toyota Tundra or Sequoia Gets More Power with AIRAID Performance Intake
- Jun 22, 2016
In Europe, small sedans and hatchbacks are all the rage, while Chinese customers prefer extended wheelbase sedans with distinctive grilles. American buyers like full-size trucks and SUVs, so Toyota created the 2007-2009 Toyota Tundra and 2007-2009 Toyota Sequoia exclusively for the U.S. market. The Tundra featured nearly 50 cab-bed-drivetrain configurations, along with headrests that could accommodate a man wearing a hard hat. The Sequoia took aim at market stalwarts like the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition, but utilized an independent rear suspension for better handling, and the durable build quality that Toyota had become known for. Both trucks came standard with the Toyota 4.7L V8, which made a more-than-adequate 276-hp and 313 lb-ft of torque. However, adding an AIRAID 512-223 cold air dam intake can increase those numbers, along with the capability of your truck.
Toyota's stellar reputation stems from decades of building small cars, with reliable engines. V8's were a relatively new venture, but the 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 worked perfectly in these big American trucks. But no matter how sophisticated these torque-y engines are, they still make power just like every other internal combustion engine: gas and air get injected into the cylinders, then a spark plug ignites the mixture and the resulting explosion forces the piston down. This downward energy (aka horsepower) turns the crankshaft, sending fluid pressure to the transmission, which ultimately turns the drive wheels. If you want to increase this energy, you simply need to inject lots of cold air into the cylinders, so that fuel detonation can burn hotter. The extra oxygen molecules in the cold air allow the combustion cycle to extract more energy/horsepower from the fuel, giving you more power at low RPMs, and faster throttle response. The AIRAID 512-223 cold air intake is designed to deliver cold air to the motor, by replacing the restrictive stock intake system with a high volume cold air intake that provides cleaner air, in a smooth, turbulence-free flow. To do this, an oversized AIRAID SynthaMax synthetic air filter is mounted in place of the stock air box, and surrounded by a powder-coated heat shield. A special top-mounted weatherstrip seals against the hood when it's closed, creating a cold air chamber to feed the throttle body. The reusable AIRAID performance air filter can collect and hold dirt for 30,000-50,000 miles (depending on road conditions), and the wide-diameter AIRAID intake tube takes the extra air collected by the filter, and sends it to the motor in a steady stream. This allows the Toyota 4.7L V8 to make more power when you step on the gas, and it reduces engine strain when you're towing or hauling. Plus, the integrated sensor fittings in the intake tube allow you to install the entire system in about 90 minutes, with simple hand tools. AIRAID also makes other Toyota performance parts that can increase the capability and efficiency of your truck. To explore your options, input your year/make/model into the AIRAID search by vehicle tool, or you can locate an AIRAID dealer near you using the dealer locator tool.
