Let Your Vortec Produce More Horsepower and Torque With An AIRAID Cold Air Dam Intake

The AIRAID cold air dam improves power and drivability at all engine speeds.

The AIRAID cold air dam improves power and drivability at all engine speeds.

Although GM performance car engines have most recently carried LS designations, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC truck and SUV engines built on this architecture have been marketed under the Vortec name. Early on, the Vortec engines were built around iron cylinder blocks and were offered in smaller displacements than car engines, though that changed quickly.

The AIRAID cold air dam virtually seals off the air filter from the hot underhood area.

In 2005, GM upgraded what was known as the Gen III small block engine to a new Gen IV specification, which included a new casting method and the facilities to add modern engine management strategies. Despite the differences between the Gen III and Gen IV, all LS/Vortec engines share some common features. These include the 4.40 inch bore centers, which they share with the original Chevrolet small block, six bolt main bearing caps, and cylinder heads with four bolts per cylinder.

In just two model years, 2007 and 2008, four different engines were offered across seven different models of GM trucks and SUVs. They were:  the 4.8L, the smallest-displacement Vortec engine which featured an iron block and aluminum heads. The 5.3L, which was the most popular Vortec truck engine, it was, in essence, a 4.8L with a longer stroke and shared the iron block and aluminum cylinder blocks. The 6.0L was installed primarily in ¾ ton and one ton trucks, the 6.0L was available with an iron engine block with aluminum heads or an aluminum block with aluminum heads named the VortecMax. The 6.2L engine is manufactured with an aluminum block and heads, and incorporates variable valve timing. The 6.2L is used primarily as a high-performance engine for the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon Denali.

Despite the relative complexity of the various engines available, if you own a Cadillac, Chevrolet, or GMC from 2007 or 2008, AIRAID has a singular solution in the cold air dam (CAD) performance air intake, part number 202-197. They are designed to provide an increased flow of cooler air from outside of the vehicle for your Vortec V8. With more incoming air available, the ECU adds more fuel to match, and the engine produces more horsepower and torque.

No need to move or remove any other components other than the stock intake, as the cold air dam retains the original location of the air filter. The panels mount in the factory air box location and utilize any existing factory cold air inlet ducts, while supplementing air flow with additional cold air passages to the filter.

Another critical factor is the nine-inch tapered conical AIRAID premium air filter that is housed inside the CAD, providing both outstanding air flow and filtration to your Vortec engine. The filter utilizes a reusable, dry, non-woven synthetic filter media. To maintain performance, clean your AIRAID filter every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on driving conditions. The best and easiest way is with the AIRAID premium dry filter cleaning solution 790-558.

Incoming cold air from outside the vehicle is directed through the air filters and into a new air intake tube with a smooth, low-restriction inner surface due to its construction of cross-linked, high-density polyethylene.  Installation of the 202-197 cold air dam is simple, with easy-to-follow instructions. You need only a few tools most everyone has in their garage and around 90 minutes to increase the power and responsiveness of your Vortec engine. And something not all cold air intake system manufacturers can claim: the 202-197 AIRAID CAD air intake system is street legal in all US states, CARB EO Number: D-609-18.

The 202-197 cold air dam is backed by AIRAID’s “No Hassle” Lifetime Warranty. If you are ever dissatisfied with the materials, workmanship or performance of one of our air filters, just give us a call at 800-498-6951 and we’ll be happy to assist you. No need to worry about a warranty card; AIRAID filters are warranted for life.

All AIRAID premium filters are produced in-house using only the finest materials available and highly specialized manufacturing equipment to ensure a level of quality control no other filter company can match. All of AIRAID's product lines are proudly manufactured in the USA.

2006-2007 Chevrolet Silverado AIRAID Cold Air Intake Increases Horsepower and Torque

The AIRAID 202-186 cold air dam air intake system includes a washable and reusable high airflow premium air filter.

The AIRAID 202-186 cold air dam air intake system includes a washable and reusable high airflow premium air filter.

The 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was introduced during the last year of the vehicle’s first generation models. It was a carry-over of the 2005 model and included an extended and crew cab variants in an LS and LT trim. Two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions were available. All models including the SS and 1500 featured four-doors and could accommodate up to six passengers. A 4.3-liter V6 engine that supplied 195-horsepower or a 4.8-liter V8 that produced 285-horsepower powered the vehicle.

The AIRAID cold air dam system keeps hot engine air out of the intake by sealing the filter with aluminum panels and weatherstripping against the underside of the hood.

The AIRAID cold air dam system keeps hot engine air out of the intake by sealing the filter with aluminum panels and weatherstripping against the underside of the hood.

The second generation of the Chevrolet Silverado was available from 2007 through 2014 and included the SS Classic, the 3500 Classic, the 1500 Classic and 1500 Heavy Duty, and the 2500 Heavy Duty.

Although a totally new Chevrolet Silverado was introduced in 2007, the former Silverado continued to be offered as the Silverado Classic. The Classic was available in several cab styles, bed lengths and came in two specialized alternatives –- a hybrid and high performance SS. The Silverado Classic models do not vary much from the equivalent 2006 Silverado models except for a few minor feature changes and a different transmission – a 5-speed manual transmission, which was offered with the V6. The Silverado Classics were available as a two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive and included a regular cab, extended cab, and crew cab. Short beds measured 6-1/2-feet and long beds were 8-feet.

A 4.3-liter V6, 4.8-liter V8, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.0-liter V8 were available to power the 1500 Classic.

The Silverado 1500 HD was a cross between a light duty 1500 and the medium-to-heavy-duty 2500HD. It was available as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed and could haul 3,129 pounds in two-wheel drive, 2,838 pounds in four-wheel drive and towed up to 10,300 pounds. A 6.0-liter V8 powered the vehicle.

The Silverado Classics included an AM/FM stereo, tilt steering, drive information center, a chromed front bumper, painter rear step bumper, and 17-inch painted steel wheels. The LS was the basic trim that added air conditioning, cruise control, a CD player, cloth rather than vinyl upholstery and more options. The LS extended cab included automatic transmission and the crew cab was available with a 4.8-liter V8.

If you live in an area where you might need some extra protection, AIRAID offers filter wraps that fit over the filter and provide even more protection.

If you live in an area where you might need some extra protection, AIRAID offers filter wraps that fit over the filter and provide even more protection.

The LT is the more luxurious of the trims. It included carpeting, upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, locks and mirrors. A 5.3-liter V8 engine powered the Crew Cab LT.

The Silverado Classic SS is a performance model with a 6.0-liter Vortec 6000 engine that produces 345-horsepower. It also included a high-performance Z60 chassis. Available as options were 20-inch wheels and tires and a special exterior and interior package. It was offered as both a two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

The AIRAID 201-186 cold air dam intake system is designed specifically for the Chevrolet Silverado models discussed. The kit retains the original location of the air filter, but also delivers big boosts of air due to a huge open-element air inlet that is protected by cold air dam panels that assist in supplying steady, free-flowing cooler outside air into the engine. It is designed so that the panels mount in the factory air box location and uses any factory cold air inlet ducts that may be present.  In addition, it offers additional cold air passages to the filter. The panels protect the air filter from the hot engine compartment air by sealing to the underside of the hood with blade-style weather stripping.

The 360° tapered AIRAID premium air filter is washable and reusable. It can last for 30,000 to 50,000 miles of normal driving before it has to be cleaned.

AIRAID offers the 790-558 air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean the AIRAID dry synthetic air filter that is present in the AIRAID 201-186 air intake system.

The system can be installed with common hand tools and is covered by an AIRAID’s exclusive No Hassle Lifetime Warranty.

The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is a heavy-duty truck designed for work. The crew cab features a standard-length box and the truck measures 20-feet long; more than 6.5-feet wide and a little less than 6.5-feet tall. It is distinguished from the 2500 light-duty model by a larger grille, more prominent hood bulges, and more chrome on the bumper.

Designed to perform serious work, the truck includes a super-firm suspension that limits body roll when cornering and offers a jarring ride on rough roads when the truck is not loaded.

Two engines were available to power the truck –- a 6.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine that delivers 353-horsepower at 5400 rpm and 373 lbs-ft of torque at 4400 rpm, which serves with a Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission; and a 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V-8 that delivers 365-horsepower at 3200 rpm and 660 lbs-ft of torque at 1600 rpm. This engine is mated to an Ultra-low sulfur diesel Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission.

Payload and trailer-towing capacity of the 2500HD varies widely depending on the configuration. However, one four-wheel drive, crew-cab standard box tester with the Duramax diesel V-8 experienced a payload rating of 2,482 pounds and a maximum trailer rating of 13,000 pounds with a regular ball hitch. A trailer-break controller for use with trailers that feature electrically controlled brakes was available as an option.

The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Classic is actually a previous generation 3500. The full-size, one-ton truck was available in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive in regular, crew and extended cabs with a choice of a short 6.6-foot bed or an 8-foot bed. Five trim levels were available including the class Work Truck, LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT, which included more equipment as standard.

Three V-8 engines power the 3500 Classic including a 6.0-liter V8, which delivers 300-horsepower and is connected to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission; an 8.1-liter V8 that delivers 330-horsepower and which includes an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission; and a Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 that produces 360-horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque and uses an Allison automatic transmission.

The 202-187 AIRAID cold air dam air intake is designed for the previous mentioned Silverado models. The intake uses the original location of the air filter but delivers a big boost of air due to a huge open-element air inlet that is protected by cold air dam panels that assures that a steady, free-flowing supply of cooler outside air reaches the engine. The panels mount in the factory air box location and incorporate the factory cold air inlet ducts if they are present. Moreover, it provides additional cold air passages to the filter. The panels isolate the air filter from the hot air of the engine compartment by sealing to the underside of the hood using blade-style weather stripping.

The 360° tapering AIRAID air filter is washable and reusable, less restrictive than other types of filters and assures excellent filtration.

AIRAID also offers the AIRAID 790-558 air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean the premium dry air filter in the AIRAID 202-187 air intake. The cleaning kit can be used to cleanse the air filter after 30,000 to 50,000 miles of normal driving. After cleaning, the air filter can be re-installed into the air intake system for more use.

2003-2009 Hummer H2 AIRAID Air Intake Kit Offers Cooler Air for More Horsepower

AIRAID air intake for the Hummer H2

The AIRAID 202-183 air intake kit fits in the factory air box, incorporates the factory cold air inlet ducts if present, and adds more cold air passages to the filter.

First introduced in 1992 by AM General, the Hummer was a truck and SUV version of the M998 HMMWV, or Humvee, military vehicle that was released into the civilian market.

In December 1999, General Motors purchased the brand name and then marketed three versions –- the Hummer H1, which was based on the military Humvee, the H2 and H3. The H2 and H3 were based on smaller, civilian-market General Motors platforms.

AM General had planned to sell a civilian version of the Humvee as early as the late-1980s. It assumed that the vehicle would have the same construction and many of the same mechanical parts. When manufactured, the civilian Hummers were finished in gloss paint and included some passenger car enhancements including air conditioning, sound insulation, better upholstery, a stereo system, wood trim, and convenience packages.

AM General sold the name to General Motors, but continued to make the vehicle. General Motors handled its marketing and distribution. Soon after, General Motors introduced two models of its own, the H2 and H3.

By 2006, General Motors was exporting the Hummer through importers and distributors in 33 countries.

Due to the rapid rise in the cost of gasoline, causing a major dip in sales of the vehicle, on June 3, 2008, one day before General Motors' annual shareholder meeting, then CEO Rick Wagoner said that the brand was being reviewed and could possibly be discontinued, sold, or redesigned. Soon after that announcement two Indian automakers including Mahindra & Mahindra said they were interested in acquiring all or part of Hummer.

AIRAID air intake installed in a Hummer H2

Once installed in your Hummer, the AIRAID kit looks great and performs better than the stock intake system.

As a result of the recession, General Motors filed for bankruptcy and announced that Hummer would be discontinued. However, the next day GM revealed that it was selling the brand to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company, a Chinese automaker. On January 6, 2010, General Motors CEO Ed Whitacre said that he hoped that the acquisition would be complete by the end of February.

The deal could not be closed in time, so the deadline was extended to give Tengzhong time to get approval of the $150 million purchase from the Chinese government.

On February 24, 2010 General Motors announced that the deal with Tengzhong had collapsed and the Hummer brand would be discontinued.

The AIRAID 202-183 air intake kit has been specifically designed for use on Hummer vehicles. It has been engineered and constructed to provide cooler air to the engine and thus increase horsepower and torque. Supplying cooler air to the engine is possible due to the cold air dam panels of the intake that provide a steady, free-flow of cooler outside air into the engine. The panels mount in the factory air box location and incorporate the factory cold air inlet ducts if present. Moreover, it provides more cold air passages to the filter. The panels also isolate the air filter from the heat of the engine compartment because it seals to the underside of the hood using blade-style weather stripping.

AIRAID filter wrap for AIRAID intake filter 202-183

If you need extra protection, AIRAID offers the 799-469 filter wrap. This will help provide a bit more air filter protection for those extreme environments.

The air intake system features a 360° conical AIRAID air filter that is washable and reusable. The company also offers the AIRAID 790-558 air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to clean the dry air filter every 30,000 to 50,000 miles of normal driving. If used in off-road and heavy dust conditions, the filter must be cleaned more often. Proper cleaning at the appropriate time will assure that the filter can be reused over and over again.

The intake can be installed using common hand tools and is backed by an AIRAID exclusive No Hassle Lifetime Warranty.

The AIRAID 202-183 air intake kit fits the following vehicle applications.

2009 Hummer H2 6.2L V8
2008 Hummer H2 6.2L V8
2007 Hummer H2 6.0L V8
2006 Hummer H2 6.0L V8

Jeremy McGrath, AIRAID-backed King of Supercross, Explains What it Means to Be a Champion

Jeremy McGrath

Jeremy McGrath has come a long way from the early days of racing. McGrath started riding at 14 years old and turned pro at 16.

If you've been following Jeremy McGrath's career you know he is one of the winningest racers in action sports. Jeremy "Showtime" McGrath is known around the world as the King of Supercross, with 12 overall Championships, over 100 wins, and 5 X Games medals to his name. He is a 2003 inductee to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and 2010 inductee to the BMX Hall of Fame. His Signature Move is the "Nac-Nac" and his list of accomplishments borders exhausting in just reading and imagining that one person has done all that Jeremy has done in his lifetime.

Jeremy McGrath in qualifying 2nd turn

McGrath fully locked coming around turn 2 during qualifying. He would go on to qualify in second position with a fastest lap time of 47.858, tied with pole sitter, Carl Renezeder.

In his mid-thirties, Jeremy retired from full time, professional motocross/supercross racing. He understood that to be competitive on a dirt bike meant going faster to keep up with the 20 somethings and that meant greater risk of injuries. But he wasn't one to simply sit on the sidelines and sign autographs. Jeremy was a racer. So when opportunity knocked in August of 2005, McGrath would get his toes wet in the world of the high flying, adrenaline filled, dirt competition complete with the safety of a full cage between him and the track. This seemed like a great gig for this husband and father of two precious little girls.

We talked to Jeremy and asked him what his thoughts were on being a family guy. "I LOVE being a dad," Jeremy said. "I have wanted to be a dad and husband since I was an older teenager. I like the establishment part of it. Totally on board with it." His folks are still married and admittedly he said that has a lot to do with his family values. He said his dad was strict, but the good kind of strict. Then Jeremy paused and said, "Not all parents parent." McGrath was a good kid and all he wanted was to be the best supercross rider and that was what he focused on. He wasn't girl crazy, he just wanted to ride.

Jeremy McGrath in his Maxxis Pro2

Coming out of Turn 6 McGrath's Maxxis Pro2 getting serious bite as he heads toward the tabletop.

Jeremy married the love of his life 14 years ago. When he talks about her, his emotion is palpable. You can seriously feel the love they share suck you in, it's that special. Not too long ago Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer and she beat the odds. But just about 18 months later she was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia as a result of the chemotherapy treatment. She was fighting for her life when another big name in racing would share his story. Rick Hendricks, of Hendricks Motorsports, had also been living with leukemia for several years. He would be instrumental in connecting Kim and Jeremy with Be The Match, an organization that finds donors for people like Kim. It was this connection that literally saved her life.

The family looks at this hurdle as being a rewarding experience saying that these challenges have a way of putting things into perspective. Jeremy shared that they've put on and participated in close to twenty "match drives" that have resulted in saving an additional 15 lives. He is passionate about Be The Match and having been a part of helping others. His conviction is inspired.

Jeremy McGrath clearing the tabletop

Jeremy McGrath clearing the tabletop with the greatest of ease.

Jeremy tweeted last week on July 27th, happy birthday to his wife. He explained that July 27th was actually her "Re-Birthday" and they were celebrating 4 years since her bone marrow transplant and celebrating life. Grateful to their donor beyond measure, this family has so many things to be thankful for. Together Jeremy and Kim share two incredible daughters, Rhowan, 10 and Bergen 8. Recently the family spent almost three weeks in Italy, for work and a little vacation, and it's plain to see the joy this dad feels getting to share this life with his McGrath Ladies!

Jeremy's come a long way from the early days of racing. What started for him at the age of 14, quickly turned into a professional racing career at the tender age of 16. A career that would go on to be, for lack of a better term, LEGENDARY. As for whether he wants his daughters to follow in his footsteps or not, "I want my girls to go to college!" he said. Sure the girls ride dirt bikes and they love going to the track with dad. Last year they even participated in Modified Kart races. But for now they do what little girls their age do; hang out with mom and dad and get a little dirty from time to time.

McGrath has seen and done a lot in his lifetime and is ready for more. In 2008 he added full time, Short-Course Off Road Race Driver to his resume when he became a member of Baldwin Racing. Ricky Johnson, one of the first Supercross legends to transition to short-course racing, helped pave the way for Jeremy McGrath. Jeremy was great for the sport, bringing awareness to the sport and spectators to the events. Then in 2014 McGrath would add Team Owner to his long list of racing accomplishments. And, he was back at Kawasaki as a Brand Ambassador where so much of his story began.

The AIRAID-backed owner-driver of JM2 (his off-road short-course truck race team) had seen a few challenges earlier in the 2016 season. However, he currently sits in second place in the Pro 2 Championship Points race going into Round 9 & 10 of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS) behind series leader, Rob MacCachren. We asked Jeremy if there was one driver in the series that made him work a little harder. He shared that secretly everyone wanted to catch Rob MacCachren. That is the racer he looks up to, because MacCachren is that good. Another fellow competitor that he keeps eyes on is Brian Deegan.

LOORRS returned to the US for Round 9 & 10 at Glen Helen Raceway, in San Bernardino, California, on July 23rd and 24th. Coming off two consecutive wins in the past month, with the first at Utah Motorsports Campus and second at Estero Beach Resort in Baja California, Mexico, Jeremy was poised to make a statement at the next race venue.

Southern California was literally a blaze with the massive Sand Fire that erupted Friday before the race and would go on to burn more than 41,000 acres in the Santa Clarita area over the next few weeks. The temperatures were well into the triple digits, but that didn't stop our racers. The drivers had two opportunities on the Friday before the event to run practice laps on the track. During practice, Jeremy would have the second fastest lap time just 3/10ths of a second behind Carl Renezeder.

During qualifying on Saturday, McGrath and Renezeder would tie with their best lap time of 47.858, recorded during Lap 2 of qualifying. This allowed Carl the pole position with Jeremy right behind him in second position.

Opening ceremonies at Glen Helen on Saturday started with honoring the 14 victims killed in last December's attack in San Bernardino. The president of Corona-based Lucas Oil, Bob Patison said, "we wanted to do something for the survivors to honor the victims of this terrible event." Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series along with 14 racers, displayed the names of the 14 who perished that day on their vehicles. Included in the ceremony were a number of the first responders to the scene. After a moment of silence and prayer, the fans gave San Bernardino's finest a standing ovation for their commitment to service and their courage. It was a moment of healing for the community of San Bernardino.

Then, the moment the fans had been waiting for, time to go racing. With Pro2 at the start line, the pace car would lead the 11 competitors for one lap then the green flag was dropped and fans were on their feet. It was in the first lap that we noticed our AIRAID-backed driver, in his Maxxis Pro2 Tundra, having what looked like some mechanical issues. There was no visible smoke or broken parts, just McGrath getting passed. Having had such a great showing in qualifying, it was easy to see that this wasn't driver related. It seemed as though Jeremy just didn't have the power he needed to stay out in front. Fortunately, a few cautions bunched the field up and this kept McGrath from getting lapped. Saturday's checkered flag afforded him a seventh place. Not the finish he'd hoped for, but still earned valuable points. Later that evening his crew discovered a kinked fuel return hose dumping extra fuel into the carburetor, causing it to flood. His motor was just running too rich to perform properly.

Sunday was a new day. But the heat wasn't showing signs of letting up anytime soon. Qualifying for Round 10 would begin promptly at 4:00 pm for the Pro2 competitors and these guys were ready to roll. It was clear in Qualifying that the mechanical issue that had plagued Jeremy in Round 9's Main Event had been put to rest. In fact, in Lap 2 of Round 10 Qualifying, Jeremy McGrath and Brian Deegan would run their fastest laps with just 4/100ths of a second between them. The field of racers in Pro2 is made up of some serious talent. After qualifying, the Round 10 main event had MacCachren in pole position, with Jeremy once again starting second. Jeremy told us that he doesn't have any particular ritual that he does before the start. He's not superstitious. But he did tell us that he gets nervous. Always has. He said, "if you don't get nervous, you're not human!" It's great to know that Jeremy McGrath is indeed human.

After the pace car left the track and the drivers got the green flag, the field was electric. And so was the crowd. Jeremy would complete the main events' 16 laps with a blown motor and having bested Carl Renezeder, who finished a lap down. Other notable drivers that encountered issues were Brian Deegan, Rodrigo Ampudia, and Bryce Menzies. Rob MacCachren finished first, with Tonka sponsored driver, Myan Spaccarelli coming in second.

Maybe it was the extreme heat that seemed to wreak havoc and create mechanical failures. Who knows. But McGrath uses his time wisely to learn more about the competition and more about what strategy he'll use in Rounds 11 & 12 at Wild West Motorsports Park in Sparks, Nevada, on August 13th & 14th. He's planning and preparing and won't back down, and AIRAID will be there rooting and cheering for Jeremy all the way.

With just 6 more Rounds before the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series Champion is crowned, we want to take a moment to thank Jeremy McGrath for not only spending time with us, but for spending time creating a positive impact on the world all around us. For standing up and being the champion for those who need a match, a voice, a hand. Congratulations Jeremy on your success during the first half of the 2016 Season. We look forward to seeing what you will do next.
